An optician can often measure important properties of old lenses with a lensmeter, but that process reads the glasses—not the current state of the eyes. Whether those measurements can support a duplicate pair depends on local rules, retailer policy, lens condition, design, fitting data, and the purpose of the new order. “Copy my old glasses” is therefore a service question, not an automatic prescription renewal.
A lensmeter reads the lenses, not the eyes
A lensmeter can identify lens power at measured reference points. For many single-vision lenses, a trained operator may recover sphere, cylinder, axis, and prism information. The instrument does not test visual acuity, eye health, binocular function, current refraction, or whether the wearer still benefits from those values.
The reading also describes the finished lenses rather than necessarily reproducing every line on the original prescription. Position-of-wear effects, manufacturing tolerances, prescribed versus measured prism, and lab design choices can influence what is found.
Do not use a phone app, printed distortion pattern, or subjective comparison to replace professional lensometry. These methods cannot reliably recover the complete instruction.
What can be recovered from single-vision and multifocal lenses
Single-vision lenses are usually the most straightforward to measure when surfaces are clear and reference points can be located. Multifocal lenses require more information. A lined bifocal may reveal distance power, near addition, segment type, and segment position. A progressive lens requires locating design markings and reference points; worn engravings or unknown designs can complicate the task.
Even when powers are measurable, the old pair may not preserve the original fitting measurements. Frame deformation can change how the lenses sit. Segment height, monocular PD, vertex distance, pantoscopic tilt, and wrap may be needed for the new frame or design.
Tint, coatings, photochromic behavior, material, and impact properties are separate questions. Visual inspection cannot always identify them, and a similar appearance does not prove the same specification.
Wear, prism, and fitting data complicate the result
Scratches, coating failure, heat distortion, lens warpage, or stress near a mount can reduce confidence in the measurement. A loose or twisted frame changes orientation. If the optical centers are no longer positioned as worn, reproducing the measured pair without understanding the distortion can preserve a problem.
Prism deserves particular caution. The instrument may detect prism at the measurement point, but a reviewer must distinguish prescribed prism, decentration effects, imbalance, and manufacturing technique. A customer should not retype the displayed value as clinical prism.
High prescriptions and large design changes also increase the importance of fresh fitting information. Moving the same nominal powers into a frame with different size, wrap, tilt, or vertex distance can change the wearing experience.
When copying preserves a useful spare-pair setup
A duplicate can be practical when the old pair performs well, the wearer needs a spare for the same task, the lenses can be measured reliably, the prescription is valid under applicable rules, and a qualified provider accepts the process. Keeping a similar frame size and position may reduce avoidable variables.
Document the task the old pair serves. A dedicated computer pair should not silently become a driving pair. A near-only pair should retain its bounded use. If the old pair's purpose is uncertain, measure the working distance and ask the original provider if records are available.
A duplicate order and a remake investigation need different evidence
A duplicate begins with a pair that performs well and aims to reproduce its useful task. A remake investigation begins with a pair that does not perform as intended. Measuring an unsuccessful pair can help the lab identify what was manufactured, but it should not be copied as the solution.
For a remake, preserve the order confirmation, original prescription, fitting measurements, frame adjustments, lens markings, and a description of the failure at exact distances. Comparing the lensmeter result with the ordered specification is a professional verification step.
For a duplicate, record the old frame's model or dimensions, how it sits, the task distance, and any design markings before dismantling it. A lab may still recommend new measurements because a different frame changes centration and position of wear.
When current clinical measurements matter more
A current examination takes priority when vision has changed, the old pair no longer performs, symptoms are present, the document has expired, or the intended task is different. Sudden or concerning visual symptoms require prompt clinical attention rather than duplication.
A new prescription can also make sense before investing in expensive lenses or a substantially different design. Copying worn lenses may save an appointment only to create a pair based on outdated information.
Keep lensmeter findings labeled as measurements
Ask the provider to separate four outcomes:
- What did the lensmeter measure in the existing pair?
- Is there a current, valid spectacle prescription supporting a new order?
- What fitting measurements must be taken for the chosen frame and lens?
- Which old-pair features can be identified and reproduced reliably?
Include the frame in the assessment rather than handing over loose lenses when possible. The worn position can help explain fitting height, optical-center placement, wrap, and how deformation may have affected the measurement. Mark which adjustments occurred over the pair's life.
If only one old lens remains, do not assume it represents both eyes or the original frame alignment. The lab should verify engravings, eye assignment, segment location, and whether the surviving lens has rotated or been remounted.
Ask for the lensmeter findings in writing and keep them labeled as measurements of the old pair. They should not be stored under the name “current prescription” unless an authorized provider has issued that document.
When comparing a proposed duplicate, ask which features could not be identified—such as coating generation, exact progressive design, or original position-of-wear data. Uncertainty should remain visible in the quote rather than being filled with a similar current product.
Separate service eligibility from frame shopping
